Relying exclusively on 20-year-old tunes would typically be the sign of a band throwing in the towel, but Iron Maiden’s Somewhere Back in Time tour is more like a band chewing up its own history and spitting it out for two solid hours. As a sort of make-up for the last tour, when the band played its latest slow jamz-laden album, A Matter of Life and Death, in its entirety, last night’s show at New York’s Madison Square Garden was all Eighties, all the time (fine, one song from 1992). The band sprinted out like a bunch of teenagers to open with a searing “Aces High,” and frontman/band pilot Bruce Dickinson nailed every note with his storied air raid siren voice sounding no worse for the wear. Below, a scientific statistical roundup of the evening’s festivities:

“Scream for me, New York City” entreaties: 13
Cheapest T-shirt: $35
Percentage of the audience ignoring the PCU “don’t be that guy” rule and wearing an Iron Maiden shirt: >30%
Band members also breaking the rule: 2
Onstage soccer games during technical delays: 1
Combined ages of band members: 310
Appearances by Eddie, the band’s 20-foot-tall zombie/mummy/cyborg mascot: 2
Instances of Spinal Tap-style gunning down of the audience with guitars: 3
Minimum amount of minutes Bruce Dickinson spent talking: 15
Better closing songs besides “Hallowed Be Thy Name”: 0
The number of the beast: 666

The name of the new Metallica album has finally been revealed on the band’s official website: Death Magnetic. The album’s title had slowly been hinted throughout last week, first simply with two magnets before additional letters began appearing. All was finally revealed Saturday, as the suddenly-tech-savvy band confirmed the title in the form of wallpapers you can put as the background of your computer. The group’s Mission Metallica site confirmed the title as well, promising their new Rick Rubin-produced album will be out in September.

Comic book movie "The Incredible Hulk" added about $1 million in box office muscle to its debut weekend, pushing the film's total domestic ticket sales to $55.4 million, according to final studio figures on Monday.

"Incredible Hulk" opened at No. 1 on box office charts with estimated Friday-through-Sunday ticket sales of $54.5 million, exceeding studio expectations but falling short of its 2003 predecessor that earned $62 million in its debut weekend.

Scientists have studied the sun for decades, sending probes to unravel its 11-year cycles, watching its outbursts and measuring how its winds shape the outer edges of the solar system.

But we've never actually dared a house call: The technology simply wasn't available -- until now.

NASA is starting work on a mission called Solar Probe Plus that will plunge deeply into the sun's atmosphere in an attempt to answer two long-standing questions: why the sun's outer atmosphere, or corona, is about 2 million degrees Fahrenheit hotter than its surface, and why the solar wind -- streams of electrically charged particles that permeate the solar system -- seems to have no organizing force.

European astronomers on Monday said they had located dozens of giant planets in three distant solar systems.

The discovery suggests that at least one third of stars similar to our own sun harbor such planets, multiplying previous estimates by five.

A trio of these 'super-Earths' -- so-called because they are several times the mass of our own planet -- were detected orbiting a star known as HD 40307 some 42 light-years away.

A newly discovered batch of well-preserved dinosaur bones, petrified trees and even freshwater clams in southeastern Utah could provide new clues about life in the region some 150 million years ago.

The Bureau of Land Management announced the find Monday, calling the quarry near Hanksville "a major dinosaur fossil discovery."

An excavation revealed at least four sauropods, which are long-necked, long-tailed plant-eating dinosaurs, and two carnivorous ones, according to the bureau. It may have also uncovered an herbivorous stegosaurus.

Animal burrows and petrified tree trunks 6 feet in diameter were found nearby. The site doesn't contain any new species but offers scientists the chance to learn more about the ecology of that time, said Scott Foss, a BLM paleontologist.

A man caught breaking into a German supermarket late at night escaped despite being handcuffed to railings -- only to be arrested after he ran to a nearby police station to get the cuffs removed.

"It was stupid of him," said a police spokesman in Frankfurt Monday. "They took the cuffs off, but they kept him."

A security guard had cuffed the man and held three others after spotting the break-in. But by the time officers arrived, the man had managed to escape, police said.

The residents of a Romanian village knowingly voted in a dead man as their mayor in Sunday's municipal election, preferring him to his living opponent.

Neculai Ivascu, 57, who ran the village for almost two decades, died from liver disease just after voting began -- but still won the election by a margin of 23 votes.

Train services were disrupted in parts of eastern India for three hours after flocks of agitated crows snapped overhead powerlines when railway workers tried to clear their nests, officials said on Monday.

They said crows and ravens often flapped their wings so hard while fighting that they tripped railway powerlines in eastern Bihar state. To solve the problem, rail staff tried to clear nests built on overhead wires on Sunday.
